Many different people contributed to the creation of the
mobile phone. Bell Laboratories introduced
the idea of the first mobile car phone, in 1947. However, Dr. Cooper, from
Motorola, was the
first to incorporate the technology into a portable device, which he patented
September 16, 1975.
Throughout the 70's and early 80's, the mobile phone was not
a popular communication device, due to the small number of radio frequencies
available in any given area. Phone calls were also very limited, only a dozen or
two calls could be made at the same time in an area. To solve this problem, many
small areas (called cells), would share the same frequencies. In this new system
of cells, a small number of radio frequencies could then accommodate a huge
number of calls. This is how the mobile phone came to be called the
"cellular phone".
Cellular phones have changed in many ways since the first
mobile phone. Several features have been added, replacing the need for other
various items such as; computers, watches, day planners, address books, alarm
clocks, and even cameras. Cell phones have become more than just a wireless
communications device. |
